Hinson Gravelle & Adair LLP attorney Eric Adair will speak at the 2014 California Land Use Law & Policy Conference, scheduled for January 9-10, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sacramento. Mr. Adair will participate in a panel discussion of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, entitled “To Frack or Not to Frack? Potential Land Use Implications,” scheduled to begin at 2:45pm on January 10. Also participating on the panel will be Mark Nechodom, Ph.D., Director, California Department of Conservation, and David Pettit, Director of Southern California Air Program, Natural Resources Defense Counsel.
The two-day land use conference, entitled “Staying Ahead of the Curve — Land Use and Natural Resource Issues for the Next Economic Cycle,” will cover a broad array of issues, including the Endangered Species Act, the California Environmental Quality Act, SB 375 and related sustainability issues, the demise of redevelopment agencies, and more. Land use law has changed. When we look back at the nature of a land use law practice before the economic crash of 2008 and through the subsequent years of recovery, it’s truly amazing just how different the practice is today.
Of course, you still need to be proficient in areas of practice that survived into the economic recovery: CEQA, endangered species regulation, development agreements and breathing life into old entitlements. But in 2014 and beyond, land use practitioners also will need to be adept at responding to client and constituent needs in emerging areas: renewable energy permitting, sustainable communities strategies and SB 375, climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, life in a post-redevelopment agency state, largescale infrastructure project approvals, the changing face of housing, changes in the nature of agency roles and jurisdiction, and “fracking” regulation under SB 4.
